How can Social Networking Sites help your Blog?

The first recognizable Social Networking Site launched in 1997, with the now defunct SixDegrees.com and the world was never the same! There is now an explosion of SNSs taking over the net, big names like; MySpace, Facebook, Cyworld, Bebo, LiveJournal, YouTube, etc... New sites pop up all the time and each has their own little niche. Now you have sites like Twitter, identi.ca, Friendfeed, seesmic, etc., etc., etc... Not to mention all the Blog communities like some of the 85+ I listed here.

What does this mean to you as a Blogger? Just one more way to get the buzz started about your Blog. Join one or join them all, it’s all about the time you want to commit to networking and what fits best with the concept of your Blog.

I have had a MySpace that I worked fairly hard with a previous Blog and did see a moderate amount of traffic from it. I think I may start one for this Blog as well. Like I said early though, it all depends on the concept of your Blog and the type of traffic you are trying to get.

Today I read on Shoemoney about a new site called 12seconds.tv. It looks like a cross between YouTube and Twitter, where as you have quick updates in the form of 12 second video clips. I have not signed up yet, but I may soon.

Here is an actual study (and the basis of this post) on why people use SNSs and the history of them.

boyd, d. m., & Ellison, N. B. (2007). Social network sites: Definition, history, and scholarship. Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, 13(1), article 11. http://jcmc.indiana.edu/vol13/issue1/boyd.ellison.html

What SNS sites do you belong to? Let’s get a list started in the comments section and really see how many are out there!

Update: Add the new Buzzing Wires profile on MySpace.

How I make money with Zazzle!

Zazzle lets you or your visitors create and purchase custom products with no out of pocket cost to you! They will take the payment, print & ship the product, while you laugh your way to the bank!

There are many ways to use Zazzle to your benefit.

  1. You can create your own gallery on their site and then fill it with products that you have designed. Best of all you choose how much you want to make on the item. The base is set at 10%, but you can take it up as high as 90%.
  2. Drop in a Blog Panel, a unique and easy way for bloggers to show off their Zazzle products directly on their blog! Simply place the Blog Panel code on your blog to let visitors see up to 3 of your Zazzle products at a time.
  3. Home page links that you build will link directly to the Zazzle home page. Once you have sent the visitor to Zazzle, you will earn a referral fee on anything that visitor buys in that shopping session!
  4. Zazzle provides a simple URL linkover-based API that allows any third party to automatically generate a customized product with dynamic images and text. Create a simple link from any image or content on your web site to automatically generate a custom product for sale. When sales come through that link, you will earn an additional 7% on top of your normal royalty. Earn significant revenues by enabling users to create products from your content or their content hosted on your website.
  5. Set up a merchbooth from your gallery and embed it on MySpace to expand your reach.
  6. Install the Merch Store application and show your products on your own Facebook profile.
  7. Create a custom flash panel like this one.

So, go ahead and dare to brand your Blog or just be creative and make some money with it.

Craigslist could be used to help promote a Blog

I thought it may be interesting to see how Craigslist could be used to help promote a Blog after seeing the amazing success we had with selling our furniture yesterday. The pictures where taken, the ad listed and the furniture sold, all in a couple of hours! So, I thought “why not promote a Blog on here”. After doing a quick search of the web, of course I found that someone had already been there and done that. I found this little gem of an article that I thought you could just check out for yourself. How to Use Craigslist for Blog Promotion by PureBlogging.com.

Have you had any success with this? Let me know.

See my ad below for this Blog! I will see how it works for me. I have listed it in the computer services section of my city.

Let me also recommend The Ultimate Guide To Buying & Selling On Craigslist.

Join a network of Blogs & get more readers!

BlogRush.com is a network of Blogs that submit their feed to be seen in a widget that the members can post on their Blogs. Each time the widget is loaded it shows 5 headlines from member Blogs. If a one of the headlines is clicked it will open the full post in a new browser window for the reader.

"Users earn "syndication credits" based on each time their blog loads the widget as well as each time any of their referrals (users that sign up after clicking the "add your blog posts" link on the widget) loads the widget. They also earn additional credit based on all the activity through 10 generations of referrals. 1 Syndication Credit = having one of their recent blog post titles served inside the widget on another member's blog."

The more syndication credits you earn, the more you are seen! The membership is free, but you must first be manually approved for their "strict quality guidelines". If you think your Blog is up to par, I encourage you to sign up and keep the networking and blogosphere growing. Find the widget at the bottom of this page and see what the members are buzzing about or go ahead and check it out for yourself at BlogRush.com.

Do you Squidoo?

I have been seeing many Bloggers talk about how Squidoo can help drive traffic to your Blog. Of course, I had to investigate. If I have learned anything yet, it is to learn from those who already know.

Here is the quick and dirty of it. (A quote directly from Squidoo's homepage)

Squidoo is the world's most popular site for building free, single pages about your passions. Highlight books, blogs, vids, online shops, or just spread the word about stuff you love. Bonus: you raise money (for you or charity) at the same time. It's fast, free, and supereasy.

So, basically it's just a huge community of people writing about what they love and reading others. Sounds good to me. I jumped right in and setup a page about this Blog.

Be sure to favorite me if you join- http://www.squidoo.com/buzzingwires.

I will give it some time to work it's magic and see if it actually creates any cross over. You can setup as many Lens (pages) as you like and they even encourage you to. As with any site, it is important to be interactive and let people see that you are there. If you can make your way onto their top Lens list I am sure it will have good rewards.

Let me know how it goes for you and I will do the same.

Affiliate Programs

Are you ready to start promoting products on your Blog and start making money from it? It's really not as hard as you may think. Once you have some traffic to your Blog all you need to do is sign-up with an Affiliate program. Here are a few I have used as examples:

Once you are setup you will apply to Advertisers that match the content of your site and what you think your visitors may be interested in. Once approved by the Advertiser you can seek out banner ads, text links, content links, and other cool little tools to help you convert your visitors into their customers. All you need to do is a simple copy and paste of some code into your blog setup page and your on your way. Be sure to read the terms for each Advertiser and the Affiliate program. Of course this is a quick and simple version, but you should get the hang of it fairly quickly. Good Luck!

Make your posts pop!

To me trying to read paragraph after paragraph of boring text is like "yawn", well i get bored just thinking about. So you want to keep your readers interested and awake!

One good way is to break up the monotony with some pics. You can find royalty free pics that you can use around the net in many places, but my favorite site is http://www.sxc.hu/. As long as you abide by the posted terms you should be fine with using them.

Another site is http://www.morguefile.com/ and I am sure that many more are out there. To keep a professional look, try and keep the pics relevant to the article content. You can play around with the location depending on the pic and article content. On previous Blogs I have done left, right and center.

So, be creative and spice up those blog posts and make them pop. Insert a picture or joke here or there and see what happens. I'm sure your readers will let you know.

I hope I didn't make anyone yawn or think I'm an ass!

Faxing: Then and Now

What happened in the year 1843 that would eventually impact your working life? The fashion re-emergence of the hoop dress you say? How about the publishing of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens? Though you may be of the strong opinion that the only way your boss could become less of a “Scrooge” would be through ghostly intervention, you are, unfortunately, missing the mark.

1843 was the year a Scottish inventor, Alexander Bain, developed the original concept still used in fax machines today. Though Bain’s invention – the chemical telegraph – wasn’t actually patented until December of 1846, he is still considered the “father of the facsimile.” Other inventors such as Italian physicist Giovanni Caselli and American inventor Elisha Gray also made later contributions to the development of modern fax machines, however Bain is still considered the main man.

Flash forward to 1994. While the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was going into effect and Tonya Harding’s accomplices were focusing on Nancy Kerrigan’s right leg, a young, international recording artist grew tired of missing important messages and faxes during his many travels. Drawing on his high-tech background, he set about inventing an integrated messaging network that would deliver faxes and voicemail via an already-existing, universally-accessible channel: the Internet. The artist was Jaye Muller, and the vision he developed swiftly grew into JFAX.COM, a multi-million dollar corporation that offered nothing less than a dramatic lifestyle upgrade in the way people communicated and did business in the 90s and beyond.

JFAX.COM was the world’s first and only integrated messaging capability, coupled with the ability to assign users local phone numbers in any of over 50 locations worldwide. It linked email to every fax and every phone in the world, fulfilling the dreams of the universal inbox and the virtual office. Seeing the incredible value of JFAX.COM, j2 Global Communications, Inc. purchased it in 1995 and, as a result, eFax was born.

Today, eFax is the #1 paperless faxing choice of individuals and businesses worldwide. eFax offers local and toll-free fax numbers that are tied to your email, as well as tiered faxing solutions – from free to Pro service – that meet any faxing need.

If you’d like to know more about how eFax works, sign up for eFax today and see how easy faxing can be.

Are you writing what people want to read?

You got a blog and you write religiously, but are you wondering where the readers are?

First things first, are you writing what people want to read? If you’re not sure then spend some time seeing what’s hot! Let the power of keywords help shape your copy and optimize your blog. Find the links on this page of a few free keyword lists that you can study to find out what people are looking for. Use these keywords in your blog copy and people will find your site better when they search.

Another important aspect is finding niche opportunities and exploiting them before or better than anyone else. Start with original content and write about subjects you are interested or an expert in. The trick is to still be able to work those hot keywords into your posts.

If you really love to write and want to get additional traffic to your blog, try posting articles. You can do this on sites like articles2u.com, easyarticles.com and others. What you get is Author credit, exposure and a link back to your site. What they get is free website content.

Are you opinionated in your writing and maybe looking to make some money on your blog as well as tell the world how you feel? An option for you maybe to Get Paid to Blog About the Things You Love! PayPerPost is the world’s largest consumer generated ad network, connecting Bloggers & Advertisers to deliver compelling online social marketing campaigns. Advertisers give you story ideas, products for review and topics for discussion. All you need to do is write it, post it and get paid.

There are many more options to help drive traffic to and make money from your blogging, so check back often and we will talk about them.
